What is DCC Ready?

What Does DCC Ready Mean?

If you're new to model railways or exploring, you may have seen "DCC Ready" on a locomotive box or description and thought what is that?

Here is where we can start.

What is DCC Ready?

DCC Ready is a locomotive that has been designed to have a DCC Decoder Fitted.

The locomotive will normally have a decoder socket installed inside it rather than installing it yourself or by someone else. This means you can plug in a decoder into a locomotive without needing to totally rewire it.

in simple terms:

DCC Ready = Ready for a DCC decoder, but the decoder isn't fitted yet.

Does DCC Ready Mean It's DCC?

DCC Ready does not have a DCC decoder already installed.

If you would like to start using a DCC Controller with a DCC Ready locomotive, you will need to have a DCC decoder fitted first.

Once you then get a DCC decoder installed, the locomotive can then be programmed and controlled on a DCC layout.

What is a DCC decoder?

A DCC decoder is a small chip used to store locomotive information inside the engine.

It receives instructions from a DCC controller and tells the locomotive what to do.

Depending on the decoder and locomotive, this can include:

  • Moving forwards and backwards
  • Controlling the speed
  • Controlling lighting
  • Operating additional functions such as fans
  • Controlling sound and sound decoders

What is a decoder socket?

A decoder socket where you can install your preferred decoder in to.

There are several different types of decoder sockets, including:

  • 6 pin
  • 8 pin
  • 18 pin
  • 21 pin
  • Next18

The decoder you need depends on the locomotive's age and size as you need the correct PIN number. Always check manufacturer's specifications as to which one you need.

DCC Ready vs DCC Fitted

DCC Ready: Locomotive is prepared for a decoder, but needs a decoder fitted.

DCC Fitted: Locomotive has already been installed with a decoder.

Can a DCC Ready locomotive run on DC?

in most cases, yes.

A DCC Ready locomotive is normally designed to be operated on a DC layout as well as being converted to DCC. Always check manufacturer's instructions for a specific locomotive.

What happens when you fit a decoder?

Once a decoder has been fitted into a locomotive you can then use a DCC controller to control said locomotive.

You can then give the locomotive its own address and control it separately from other DCC Fitted locomotives on the layout.

In Summary

its a great option if you want to buy a locomotive now and convert it to DCC later.
